It looks like the Baltimore Orioles are at it again. A front office known for its constant 40-man roster turnover has now cut former Philadelphia Phillies bench player Weston Wilson in its latest minor move.

Late Sunday night, the Orioles designated Wilson for assignment according to MLB Trade Rumors after acquiring infielder Bryan Ramos in a trade with the Chicago White Sox. The decision to remove Wilson off the 40-man roster comes just a week and a half after Baltimore claimed the 31-year-old off waivers from the Phillies on Jan. 22.

Orioles DFA Weston Wilson despite flashes of potential he showed with Phillies

Wilson had his moments in his three years in Philadelphia from 2023 through 2025. He played all over the field and flashed a bat that looked like it could make him a productive part-time player for the Phillies. But aside from a few memorable moments, he fizzled out and never grabbed hold of the opportunity presented.

In 103 games with the Phillies, Wilson slashed .242/.328/.428 with nine home runs over 245 plate appearances. He struggled in 2025 after beginning the season on the injured list with a strained oblique. He slashed just .198/.282/.369 in 125 plate appearances.

He'll be remembered for a couple of big moments with the Phillies. Wilson began his MLB career with a bang, homering in his first-ever MLB at-bat on Aug. 9, 2023. If that date seems familiar, it was also the day of Michael Lorenzen's no-hitter. Needless to say, Wilson's first big league home run was a bit overshadowed.

Just over a year later, Wilson was at it again when he became just the ninth Phillies player to hit for the cycle, completing the 10th cycle in franchise history on Aug. 16, 2024.

Wilson is out of minor league options heading into the 2026 season. The Phillies cut their losses and designated Wilson for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for J.T. Realmuto when that re-signing became official on Jan. 20.

Now we will just wait to see if another team takes a chance and claims him off waivers, Otherwise Wilson will head to free agency and have to try to latch on somewhere (maybe Philly?) on a minor league deal.
