When the Philadelphia Phillies made their big move at the trade deadline last season, they had to pay a huge price to get it done. The Phillies acquired their much-needed shutdown closer in Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for top pitching prospect Mick Abel, along with top catching prospect Eduardo Tait. Abel was struggling to find consistency in his game at the time, so he ultimately became expendable. But Tait was the tougher loss for Phillies, as he was on the verge of breaking out and rapidly ascending their minor league system.
Since moving to the Twins’ organization, Tait had actually struggled a bit during the final couple of months of the 2025 season. Nevertheless, apparently the former Phillies’ top prospect is still highly regarded as one of the top young catchers in all of baseball as of this moment. That is because MLB.com came out with their list of the top 10 catching prospects of 2026 earlier this year and Tait was firmly ranked No. 8 on the distinguished list.
Phillies still won't regret trading Eduardo Tait for Jhoan Duran
During his past two seasons in the Phillies’ minor league system, the young teenage catcher had been producing at a 15+ home runs, 90+ RBIs clip each year, numbers that are comparable to current Phillies star catcher J.T. Realmuto. In being Philadelphia’s top catching prospect at the time, along with the offensive struggles of Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchán, Tait was expected to be the potential heir to the Phillies’ catching position in due time.
However, that ideal plan is no longer possible as Tait is now the property of the Twins from here on out. He may have slowed down a bit by putting up just a .250 average, .694 OPS, along with just three home runs and 14 RBIs in 30 games played with Minnesota’s High-A affiliate Cedar Rapids following the 2025 trade deadline. Nevertheless, Tait is still currently ranked No. 3 among Twins prospects, according to MLB Pipeline, as his offensive potential remains his calling card as Jim Callis of MLB.com certainly believes in his abilities as well.
As for the Phillies, it could become quite painful for them down the road to lose a potential star catcher-in-the-making. But with their focus on winning right now, the sacrifice was needed and nonetheless worth it. That is because to add an important piece like Duran to complete their contending puzzle, it could be just enough to get Philadelphia to the next level to finally capture the World Series title in their near future.
