Following the Field of Dreams game in Iowa on Thursday, in which the Phillies picked up a resounding 7-1 win, the team hopes to finally be on track after sputtering since the All-Star break. The game was a step in the right direction for both the Phillies offense and Luis Arraez specifically.
Arraez, as is tradition, came to the Phillies in a trade with the Giants and immediately went on one of the worst stretches at the plate of his career. He went 0-for-15 over the course of three games, which is something he hadn't done since 2021.
Still, even through the slump, the three-time batting champion has had a positive impact overall since he donned the red pinstripes.
Bryce Harper at the plate has been unlocked by Luis Arraez's presence in the Phillies lineup
Bryce Harper, as has been the theme of the Phillies' season, has had a rollercoaster campaign. After a hot first half that earned him a Commissioner's All-Star selection, Harper cooled off significantly in July.
During the month, Harper hit .172 with two home runs and 11 RBI. In August, Harper began to turn his fortunes around at the plate, batting .268 with three home runs and seven RBI halfway through the month. The most significant addition for Harper between July and August has been Luis Arraez.
Arraez batting fourth protects Harper in the lineup, and the numbers show Harper has been a beneficiary. MLB Analyst Ryan Spaeder on Twitter detailed just how significant that impact is. Since Arraez's arrival in Philadelphia, Harper has a .535 OBP in 43 plate appearances.

Arraez hasn't just been a plus for Harper, but the Phillies lineup as a whole.

Luis Arraez hasn't hit the way he's famous for hitting in his first 10 games with the Phillies; he's hit .244 with 11 hits, one home run, six RBI, and a .255 OBP. However, his presence and reputation as a hitter has helped raise the tide of the rest of the lineup.
WIP Radio Host Jack Fritz on Twitter shed light on Arraez's impact on the Phillies offense since being acquired. The Phillies rank first in walk rate, second in OBP, and 29th in strikeout rate.
Despite his current slump, the Phillies should be encouraged about what the lineup is capable of when Arraez returns to his average numbers. Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic, in her Aug. 12 article on Arraez, wrote that interim manager Don Mattingly is not concerned about Arraez's current struggles.
“No doubt, (you’d) take him up there in these spots over the last few games,” Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly told Varnes. “No. 1, you know he’s going to put it in play. That’s just who he is. He’s going to hit the ball hard somewhere. He’s going to hit it — just today, (he) hit it right at that guy.”
While Arraez has underachieved on the surface in his tenure with the Phillies, the surrounding metrics show he's helping raise the floor of this lineup.
