Rival predicts Phillies to sign decorated top free agent to replace Alec Bohm
The Phillies could be in the market for a third baseman after rumors broke out about All-Star Alec Bohm being available for trade.
Philadelphia Phillies All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm is reportedly on the trade block as the Phillies look to make some changes after a disappointing end to the 2024 season, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Bohm enjoyed a breakout season in which the 28-year-old hit .280 with 44 doubles, 15 home runs and 97 RBI.
Bohm struggled down the stretch and into the postseason. He has had his fair share of moments that rubbed Phillies fans the wrong way such as when he was caught on camera saying “I (expletive) hate this place” after his defensive struggles in front of the home crowd at Citizens Bank Park in 2022.
The organization can consider internal options to replace Bohm if he’s traded. The Phillies could also look into options reportedly on the trade market and in free agency.
Rival predicts Phillies to sign decorated top free agent to replace Alec Bohm
A rival evaluator predicts that the Phillies will sign Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency, per ESPN’s Buster Olney. Bregman was the second overall pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft and has spent his entire nine-year career with the Astros.
Bregman is a decorated player. He’s a two-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, Gold Glove winner, Silver Slugger winner and an All-Star Game MVP. He finished fifth in American League MVP voting in 2018 and second in MVP voting in 2019.
The 30-year-old is a career .272 hitter. Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with a .768 OPS, 26 home runs and 75 RBI in 2024. It was a bit of a down year from an offensive standpoint.
Bregman is typically well below the MLB average strikeout rate and above the walk rate. He’s a disciplined hitter and an above-average defender. Primarily a third baseman, he has experience playing shortstop, second base and left field in his major league career.
The Phillies are a World Series-caliber team and will continue to be competitive as long as Bryce Harper is under contract. Bregman has played in 99 career playoff games, so he has a ton of experience on the biggest stage. He has 17 doubles, 19 home runs and 54 RBI in 370 career postseason at-bats.
Spotrac has Bregman’s market value set at four years and $120 million. He’s projected to make $30 million per year, and the total amount depends on the length of the contract.
The Phillies have a big decision to make for the future of their third baseman. Will Bohm be traded? Will they go after a player like Bregman in free agency? Will they give someone already in the organization an opportunity? The rumors will continue to swirl until a move or announcement on Bohm’s future is made.
