Only one Phillies player predicted to make All-MLB Team

With so many Phillies having huge seasons so far in 2024, only one is on track for the All-MLB Team.

When the Philadelphia Phillies had a franchise-record eight players representing the team at this year’s All-Star Game, it was a fine reflection of the impressive season that many of their players had been having. Not only were the stars doing what they do best, but even the surprising risers this season like Alec Bohm, Cristopher Sánchez and Matt Strahm were also doing their part.

However, when MLB.com came out with their early predictions for this year’s All-MLB Team, only one Phillies player actually made the cut.

Staff ace Zack Wheeler has been producing another “Wheeler-type” season again this year, compiling a 12-6 record with a 2.73 ERA and 0.98 WHIP, with 170 strikeouts over 154 2/3 innings. His ERA and WHIP totals put him in the top 5 in the league, while his strikeout total has him respectably in sixth as well.

More importantly, amidst the Phillies’ recent struggles following the All-Star break, Wheeler has been one of the few players on the team who has remained consistent with their performance, posting a 2.84 ERA and 0.95 WHIP with 44 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. Still in doubt? Take a look at this:

But with the amount of players representing the Phillies at the Midsummer Classic, one would have expected to see at least another Phillie or two make the All-MLB team prediction list. But when you take a look at some of the MLB stars they’re up against, it makes a lot more sense.

Just take a look at the monstrous years that the likes of José Ramirez, Bobby Witt Jr., Emmanuel Clase, Corbin Burnes, Tarik Skubal and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had been having and you can understand why.

Nevertheless, there is still over a month left in the MLB season, so there’s plenty of time for Phillies to unseat some of these stars to get themselves included. Hopefully in doing so, they will also help the Phillies successfully reach the postseason and power their way to the World Series.
