The Philadelphia Phillies (1-3) began their second series of the season by losing 6-3 in heartbreaking fashion to the Cincinnati Reds (3-1) on Monday night. Much-maligned reliever Connor Brogdon was the fall guy in extra innings after the Philadelphia bats were once again held in check, barely able to scrape together three runs.

After an underwhelming and shockingly awful start to the 2024 season, the Phillies will look to get off the snide tonight as they host the Reds for the second game of the three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

Phillies vs. Reds probable pitchers

  • Spencer Turnbull will take the ball for the Phillies tonight. A surprise addition to the rotation out of spring training, Turnbull will have a chance to show what he can do while Taijuan Walker recovers from his shoulder impingement. The 31-year-old right-hander was impressive in spring training, posting a 2.25 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, and 12 strikeouts in eight innings. Signed as a depth piece, Turnbull will take the first step tonight in reviving a promising MLB career before injuries derailed him.
  • Graham Ashcraft will start for the visitors tonight. The 26-year-old right-hander is heading into his third season in the majors. In 2023, he threw 145 2/3 innings with a 4.76 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 26 starts for the Reds. The former sixth-round pick throws three pitches but relies on his 95.8 mph cutter over half the time (53 percent). His slider, which he uses 37.4 percent of the time, sits 88.3 mph. His sinker averages 96.5 mph, but he only throws that 9.6 percent of the time.
