The Philadelphia Phillies (4-4) won their first series of the 2024 season with a 5-2 win over the Washington Nationals (2-6) on Saturday. The Phillies will look to go over the .500 mark for the first time this season with a series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Park.

Ranger Suárez picked up his first win of the young season with a solid six innings of four-hit ball, allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts. The bats went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position but managed enough offense behind J.T. Realmuto's three-run home run in the third inning. José Alvarado secured his second save of the season with one strikeout and one walk in a somewhat laborious 28-pitch ninth inning.

The team also announced before the game that reliever Connor Brogdon had been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a young left-hander, Benony Robles.

Phillies vs. Nationals probable pitchers

  • Cristopher Sánchez (0-0) will start for the Phillies today after a strong five-inning, eight-strikeout season debut against the Cincinnati Reds. Last season, the left-hander faced Washington twice. He went 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA across 12 innings of work in which he struck out 11 while walking just one batter.
  • The Nationals will counter with MacKenzie Gore, pitching in his third MLB season. The lefty took a no-decision in his season debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates, giving up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. In 2023, Gore went 0-3 with a 10.54 ERA against the Phillies, who scored 16 runs on 22 hits, including five long balls, off the 25-year-old. He did strikeout 14 batters in his 13 2/3 innings against Philadelphia, however.

Phillies vs. Nationals injury updates

  • Nationals shortstop C.J. Abrams was scratched before Saturday's game with a bone bruise on his left pinkie finger (his non-throwing hand), which he injured while sliding on Friday night. X-rays were negative, but he's out of the lineup again on Sunday.
