Today is the day that there are going to be roster moves across the league and the Philadelphia Phillies are no exception. Teams are needing to clean their rosters up ahead of the deadline to add guys to the 40 man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft as well as plan ahead for their offseason moves in addition to the upcoming nontender deadline.

While most of the moves we are set to see are going to look comparatively minor, they could have big time implications going forward and could provide some clues as to who teams could be adding to their rosters. Case in point: the Phillies struck a deal today to send second baseman Oliver Dunn to Milwaukee in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers.

Phillies trade Oliver Dunn to the Brewers

This isn't an earth-shattering move, but it does come with a fair bit of upside for the Phillies. Philadelphia had claimed Dunn off of waivers back in late 2022, but he spent the entire 2023 season in Double-A where he posted a .902 OPS. He was a nice depth piece to stash in the minor leagues, but probably didn't have much of a future with Philadelphia.

The return for the Phillies was actually pretty good. Mendez is a lower level outfield prospect who hasn't advanced past high-A who hasn't shown much power as a pro so far, but he did have a nice start to his career in rookie ball back in 2021. Robert Moore is the more exciting name, though. Moore seemed like he was going to be a lock to be a first rounder out of Arkansas before struggling in his draft year and falling to the 72nd overall pick in the 2022 draft. Moore spent the 2023 season in high-A and put up a .682 OPS with eight homers and 26 steals.

Even if Mendez and Moore don't work out, the Phillies are not losing out on much here. However, Moore has enough of a pedigree from his college days to make it more than a worthy gamble while cleaning up the 40 man roster a bit.
