After a disappointing end to their series against the Mets, in which starter Taijuan Walker limped off the field after getting hit by a comebacker, the Philadelphia Phillies (31-14) will host another division rival for a three-game weekend series. The Washington Nationals (20-22) come to town on Friday having lost two in a row and six of their last 10.

The Phillies sit 2.5 games up on the Atlanta Braves for first in the NL East heading into action today. They're 9.5 games ahead of the Nationals, who are 13-12 on the road this season. Young shortstop CJ Abrams continues to lead the way for the Nats, hitting .261 with an .814 OPS, seven home runs, 20 RBI and eight stolen bases.

Phillies vs. Nationals probable pitchers, May 17

  • Zack Wheeler (4-3) will take the hill, looking to bounce back from his uncharacteristic rough outing in Miami last weekend. The Phillies ace had easily his worst outing of the year against the Marlins, surrendering six runs on six hits and three walks with just two strikeouts through four laborious innings. Wheeler still has a 2.53 ERA and 10.97 K/9 through nine starts this season.
  • Jake Irvin (2-3) will start for the visitors. The 27-year-old right-hander comes in with a 3.55 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in eight starts. Four of his outings this year have been quality starts. In his most recent start, he held the Red Sox to two runs on four hits with six strikeouts over seven innings. The Phillies scored four runs on five hits through six innings against Irvin in April.
