Since signing with the Philadelphia Phillies in March 2022, Kyle Schwarber has locked down the leadoff spot in the order, set the record for most leadoff home runs in a single season, and now earned his second straight nomination for the Phillies’ representative for the Roberto Clemente Award.
Major League Baseball’s Roberto Clemente Award goes to the player who "represents baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions on and off the field."
Phillies' Kyle Schwarber shows his heart as big as his bat with second Roberto Clemente nomination
On the field, Schwarber has been everything the Phillies thought they were getting and more. His All-Star appearance and Silver Slugger Award in 2022 was a solid beginning to his Phillies’ career. That doesn’t even take into account the team’s success under his guidance. Since the signing, the Phillies are 265-205, have won five playoff rounds, and came within two wins of capturing the franchise’s first championship since 2008.
In the clubhouse, Schwarber has been the Phillies’ most important player. His leadership is unquestioned. He answered the tough questions when things went south. He doesn’t panic. He knew the team was way too talented to keep the slide going. He drags his team into the fight. He shows up when it matters most.
Now, his work in the community is being recognized again. His second straight nomination for the Roberto Clemente Award speaks to his personality and service. A lot of players who sign big contracts, as Schwarber has, give back. The Phillies are one of the best organizations in baseball when it comes to being active in the community.
Schwarber’s Neighborhood Heroes expresses “gratitude for the unique sacrifices of first responders, military personnel, and their families.” Schwarber’s upbringing in a first responder community fueled his passion for first responders. If it weren’t for baseball, Schwarber would more than likely be a police officer. The foundation offers multiple fundraising opportunities for first responders and their families throughout the year.
