Another Phillies infielder lands on the 10-day IL
The Phillies' bad injury luck continues with Edmundo Sosa hitting the injured list.
The injury news keeps coming for the Philadelphia Phillies. While they started the six-game road trip in good shape, they'll be limping back to Philly after Sunday's game with a much different-looking roster than the one they set out with.
Just in the last week, the Phillies have placed outfielder Austin Hays on the 10-day IL with a kidney infection, and finally sent Alec Bohm to the 10-day IL because of his strained left hand. While not as severe and not requiring a trip to the injured list, J.T. Realmuto's banged-up knee forced the Phillies to add a third catcher to the active roster on Saturday.
And then the team announced on Sunday that they've placed another infielder on the injured list.
Another Phillies infielder lands on the 10-day IL with Edmundo Sosa out with back spasms
Before their series finale with the Miami Marlins, the Phillies placed reserve infielder Edmundo Sosa on the 10-day IL with back spasms. The move is retroactive to Sept. 7. Sosa last played on Friday when he came in as a defensive replacement during the Phillies' 16-2 thrashing of the Marlins.
Sosa has been a quality backup infielder this season for the first-place Phillies, getting plenty of playing time while Trea Turner was on the IL and more recently with Bohm sidelined. The 28-year-old is batting .264/.319/.437 with seven home runs, 30 RBI and seven steals in 253 plate appearances this season.
Seth Johnson called up to make his MLB debut
The corresponding roster move comes with right-hander Seth Johnson, the team's No. 15 prospect, getting called up to make his MLB debut against the Marlins.
Johnson was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline in the package for reliever Gregory Soto. He's 2-7 in 23 starts in the minors this season, with a 2.33 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 88 2/3 innings. His numbers since joining the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, are impressive. He has posted a 0.56 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in 16 innings over three starts.
With the Phillies looking for someone to step into the fifth spot in the rotation, Johnson will get at least one shot at it — although Kolby Allard is eligible to be recalled on Sept. 10 and will likely get the next opportunity.
