Phillies fans are done with Taijuan Walker and taking matters into their own hands

How far are Phillies fans willing to go to rid themselves of the beleaguered veteran?

Philadelphia Phillies starter Taijuan Walker had a chance to make amends when he was given back his spot in the rotation on Thursday against the New York Mets. But just as many had expected, all did not end well, as Walker gave up eight earned runs on six hits in just three-plus innings as the Phillies went on to lose 10-6 at the hands of the Mets. With another utterly disappointing outing like that, it has made many ponder whether his days as a Phillie are numbered.

Apparently, it has gotten to the point where if the Phillies aren't going to do anything about it, some of their loyal supporters are willing to take the matter into their own hands, per Kevin Kinkead of Crossing Broad.

One Phillies fan, by the name of Bill, has gone above and beyond to set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to work toward a buyout of Walker’s contract.

Cleverly named "The Taijuan Walker Exit Strategy," the ultimate goal was set to $18 million. That amount is equivalent to one full year of Walker’s deal, so presumably, Bill is hoping that the initiative will inspire the Phillies enough to cover the rest of the buyout. As of Saturday morning, $222 has been raised so far, with a total of 28 contributors, including namesakes Rob Thomson ($5) and Taijuan Walker ($5).

Walker has had a rough season in 2024. If he wasn’t on the sidelines as a result of an injury, he was struggling mightily with his command on the mound. To date, he has posted an abysmal 3-7 record with a career-worst 6.91 ERA and 1.67 WHIP, giving up 63 earned runs, including 24 home runs, along with 34 walks and 57 strikeouts in 82 innings of work. If he wasn’t already motivated enough to turn his fortunes around, the latest GoFundMe gimmick should definitely light a fire under him to get things going soon.

Hopefully, Walker will eventually find his way back and revert to his prior form. All else fails, jokes aside, at least he may have a tidy $18 million waiting for him courtesy of Bill.
