Phillies are the talk of the baseball world and national media is taking notice
The national media could only hold off so long before talking about the Phillies' special start.
The Philadelphia Phillies came into the season looking to start 2024 on a winning track and to give themselves room to move in the division. They certainly have done that and more. The Phillies have made it clear to themselves and to the rest of baseball that they refuse to go anywhere but up.
They currently sit at 30-13 — the best record in baseball. They are the first team to reach the 30-win mark, after being the first to reach 20 wins at the end of April.
Phillies are the talk of the baseball world and national media is taking notice
This Phillies team is drawing the national audience in a way that fans couldn't have seen coming. Practically every position player, with the addition of some pitching, has had to miss a day or more due to injury or as a precaution. Regardless of the circumstance and who has been trotted out onto the field, this team has shown a willingness to play up to the competition and has welcomed contributions from everyone on the roster.
Along with their shiny 30 wins, the Phillies have been an absolute wrecking ball. They've not just handled the teams they've played so far but have beaten them into submission. This comes from the beautiful balance the Phillies have orchestrated between their offense and defense.
The offensive onslaught has been led by one of The Daycare's own, Alec Bohm. Bohm leads the team in RBI (35), on-base percentage (.400), slugging percentage (.526), and OPS (.926). Bryce Harper, surprisingly, has not kicked into full gear quite yet, even with two grand slams so far this season and nine home runs overall.
The other part has been the stellar starting rotation, which has deservingly stolen the spotlight on a national scale, with a 2.65 ERA. Zack Wheeler still has a 2.53 ERA, even though he had the roughest outing of the season on Mother's Day in Miami with six earned runs. Aaron Nola (3.10 ERA) is coming off of a gem for his first complete game shutout of the year in Queens. Ranger Suárez leads the way with a 1.50 ERA and continues to impress. The horses of the rotation were the big reason the team put together a 12-game win streak at home.
During their home win streak, the pitching staff gave up fewer than two runs in half of their games, while the offense put up five or more runs in nine of those games. ESPN Sunday Night Baseball analyst Eduardo Pérez certainly sang the Phillies' praises with the team's response since Trea Turner went on the IL with a hamstring strain. He reiterated this team's ability to slug their way to wins and how dynamic the players are.
The Phillies will take on the NL East rival Mets on June 8 and 9 in London, England (subscription required). This stage could see the Phillies go from a national story to showcasing themselves as an international darling in baseball.
