It was looking bad early on, as the Nationals (49-64) took a 3-0 lead. However, spurred on by Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm hitting back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the third, the Phillies (62-51) charged back to win 8-4. Schwarber was the star of the first game, with five RBI in total. Now, Philadelphia will aim to sweep the double-header in Washington, D.C.

Probable starting pitchers

It's been an extremely challenging 2023 for Ranger Suárez (2-5), whose season didn't start until mid-May due to injury. He's on course to have his least-productive year since becoming a regular starter in 2021, highlighted by a 4.01 ERA and 1.430 WHIP. The Phillies still have hopes this is the same pitcher capable of reproducing what he showed during Game 3 of last year's World Series. In this respect Suárez showed something in limiting the Marlins to one run over 6.1 innings in his previous start, but caution remains after allowing 10 hits and two walks.

In a season of dark times for the Nationals, Josiah Gray (7-9) has shone brightly. The 2023 first-time All-Star is starting to show why he was a 2018 second round draft pick, while still being capable of more. This is reflected in the contrast between a projected career-best 3.54 ERA and a 1.426 WHIP on course to be the second-worst of his five years in the Majors. Last time out was a tough time for Gray, as he lasted just 3.2 innings versus the Brewers, after giving up four hits, three walks and five earning runs.
