In what was a tougher than predicted series versus the Royals, the Phillies (61-51) eventually did what was required, winning the rubber match 8-4. As a result they now hold the top wild card spot in the NL, albeit on a tie-breaker. In addition -- whilst appreciating there's still a long way to go -- they have a 3.0 game advantage of the chasing pack for a playoff spot. Next up, the Phillies continue their homestand with a four-game set against a Nationals (49-63) ballclub they similarly do not want to underestimate.
Probable starting pitchers
It's been an extremely challenging 2023 for Ranger Suárez (2-5), whose season didn't start until mid-May due to injury. He's on course to have his least-productive year since becoming a regular starter in 2021, highlighted by a 4.01 ERA and 1.430 WHIP. The Phillies still have hopes this is the same pitcher capable of reproducing what he showed during Game 3 of last year's World Series. In this respect Suárez showed something in limiting the Marlins to one run over 6.1 innings in his previous start, but caution remains after allowing 10 hits and two walks.
Things have not gone as planned for Trevor Williams (5-6) in the first season of a two-year, $13 million deal he signed with the Nationals. Making the situation tougher, he seems to be pitching worse as the season progresses. July was Williams' worst month yet, highlighted by a 5.97 ERA and 1.709 WHIP. He missed his last scheduled start due to the unfortunate situation of having to go on the bereavement list.
