The Phillies (70-58) got the Cardinals (56-73) series off to a good start on Friday night, overcoming an early 2-0 deficit to record an convincing 7-2 win. The lineup spread out the 11 hits, which included Kyle Schwarber's team-leading 35th home run of the season. The Phillies continue to maintain a hold on the top NL wild card spot, as they improve to 3-1 overall on this homestand. They'll now aim to continue the momentum and clinch the Cardinals series on Saturday night.
Probable starting pitchers
Zack Wheeler (9-6) has performed quite as well as recent seasons, but this tells you more about how excellent he's been for the Phillies. He still leads all team pitchers with a 3.1 WAR and 16 quality starts. In addition, Wheeler has a 3.70 ERA, 3.04 FIP and a fine 1.106 WHIP. Last time out versus the Nationals was one of his less impressive outings of the season, as he allowed seven hits and four earned runs in 7.0 innings.
Last season was the toughest yet for Dakota Hudson (5-0), as he recorded career highs with a 4.5 ERA and 1.446 WHIP in 27 games (26 starts). This year he didn't play for the Cardinals until July, and started off in the bullpen. Results have been mixed for Hudson since returning to the rotation, with a 3.95 ERA, 4.84 FIP ans 1.315 WHIP. In his previous start against the Mets, he gave up five hits, a couple of walks and two earned runs, while striking out seven in 5.1 innings.
