After stumbling again on Tuesday night, the Philadelphia Phillies (5-6) will attempt to secure the series win in the final game of the three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals (6-6) on Wednesday afternoon. The Phillies failed to get above .500 on Tuesday, dropping a 3-0 decision against the Cardinals.
The Phils' sagging offense couldn't get anything going against Cardinals ace Sonny Gray. The bats scraped together eight hits but had 13 strikeouts, grounded into three double plays and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Starter Zack Wheeler put in seven quality innings, giving up just the three earned runs with five strikeouts, and is now somehow 0-2 on the season.
One positive that did come out of the loss was Trea Turner's 39th straight stolen base. He made the swipe in the fourth inning, tying former Phillies great Jimmy Rollins for the fourth-longest consecutive stolen base streak in MLB history.
Phillies vs. Cardinals probable pitchers, April 10
- Manager Rob Thomson will hand the ball to Aaron Nola (1-1) on Wednesday afternoon to close out the series. The right-hander went 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his last start against the Washington Nationals, bringing his season ERA down to 5.40. He struck out four in that outing but walked four, so he will look to bring better command to the hill against the Cardinals.
- The Cardinals will send Lance Lynn (0-0) to the mound in today's series finale. The 36-year-old righty has given up four earned runs off of 12 hits over 8 2/3 innings in two starts this season, including three home runs in his last game versus the Miami Marlins. He faced the Phillies once in 2023, striking out seven but allowing five runs on 10 hits through 5 1/3 innings of work.
