The Philadelphia Phillies (65-43) will try to bounce back from a disappointing July when they begin a 10-game West Coast road trip against the Seattle Mariners (57-53) on Friday night. The Phillies have dropped five straight series and are on a four-game losing streak after being swept out of Philly by the New York Yankees.
With a dismal 3-9 record since the All-Star break, the Phillies have seen their lead in the NL East shrink to 6.5 games over the Atlanta Braves. They have also lost their spot as the best team in baseball, now trailing the Cleveland Guardians by 1.0 game.
The Mariners come into the series 5-5 in their last 10 and are tied for the lead in the AL West. Like the Phillies, Seattle's pitching staff has been the strength of the team this season and ranks second in MLB with a 3.46 ERA (the Phillies are third at 3.55). The hitting hasn't been nearly as good though, ranking 28th with 431 runs scored (the Phillies rank fifth with 527).
