The Philadelphia Phillies (23-11) won a delayed, rain-soaked affair on Saturday and can secure the series win against the San Francisco Giants (15-19) on Sunday Night Baseball. It was a stress-free victory, as the Phils jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings and coasted to a 14-3 win to back starter Ranger Suárez to his sixth win of the season.

It was the Phillies' first game without Trea Turner. The shortstop landed on the 10-day IL and will be out for at least six weeks. It didn't slow the offense down, though, thanks to a 12-hit attack and some sloppy defense on the part of the Giants.

The win moved the Phillies 1.5 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves for the NL East lead, after the Braves dropped their second straight to the Dodgers.

Phillies vs. Giants probable pitchers, May 5

  • Taijuan Walker (1-0) takes the ball for his second start of the season. The 31-year-old debuted last Sunday against the Padres, giving up six runs on eight hits through 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Walker made two starts against the Giants last year. He got throttled in his first start against them, allowing four runs on eight hits in 2/3 of an inning. His second start went better when he went five innings, giving up three runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts.
  • Logan Webb (3-2) makes his eighth start of the season tonight. He comes in with a 2.98 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. After a stretch of four strong outings, his last start against Boston didn't go well. The 27-year-old right-hander gave up four runs on nine hits through 3 2/3 innings. He didn't face the Phillies last season, but in 2022, he had an eight-inning, three-run, 10-strikeout start against them.
