The Philadelphia Phillies (22-11) held on for a 4-3 win on Friday night in the series opener against the San Francisco Giants (15-18) and will look to guarantee a series split at minimum with a win on Saturday.

The exciting win catapulted the Phillies into first place in the NL East for the first time since 2022. They head into action on Saturday with the best record in MLB. With the Atlanta Braves' loss to the Dodgers, the Phils lead the division by 0.5 games.

The victory came at a cost, though. Shortstop Trea Turner scored the eventual winning run in the fourth inning when he made an electric dash from second base all the way to home plate on a passed ball. He narrowly beat the tag but left the game shortly after with a sore left hamstring. He was placed on the 10-day IL earlier today.

Phillies vs. Giants probable pitchers, May 4

  • Ranger Suárez (5-0) will start for the Phillies today, fresh off his April NL Player of the Month award on Friday. The lefty has a 1.32 ERA and 0.63 WHIP heading into his seventh start. He has issued just five walks through 41 innings, with 40 strikeouts and a 60.8 percent ground ball rate. His MLB-leading 81.9 average exit velocity has made easy work for his defense.
  • Keaton Winn (3-3) will take the ball for the Giants. After debuting last season, the 26-year-old right-hander seems to have solidified his place in the Giants' rotation this year. He has a 3.18 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP through six outings. He has recorded 28 strikeouts in 34 innings but gives up hard contact — his 92.9 mph average exit velocity is the highest among qualified pitchers.
