The Philadelphia Phillies (38-17) will look to brush aside the recent rough stretch when they face off with the San Francisco Giants (28-27) for the second game of their series on Tuesday night. Monday's 8-4 loss was their third defeat in four days, which seems shocking after watching them mow down the competition for over a month.
The Phillies committed three errors in the loss, which was quite possibly their worst defensive game of the season, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Corey Seidman. It was their eighth loss in a row at Oracle Park. They haven't won in San Francisco since 2021. Hopefully, sending their ace Zack Wheeler to the bump will help get them back on the winning track.
The Phils still hold the best record in baseball and kept their 6.0-game cushion on the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, with the Braves losing their Memorial Day matchup to the Washington Nationals.
Phillies vs. Giants probable pitchers, May 28
- Zack Wheeler (6-3) will start for the Phillies today. The ace righty holds a 2.53 ERA and 0.98 WHIP through 11 starts. He has gone at least seven innings in both starts since his rough outing in Miami and now has seven quality starts on the year. Last time out, Wheeler held the Rangers to two runs on five hits over seven innings, logging five strikeouts.
- Erik Miller (0-2) will draw the start against his former team today. The Phillies' 2019 fourth-round draft pick was traded to the Giants for Yunior Marte before the 2023 season. Making his MLB debut earlier this season, the 26-year-old left-hander has a 4.38 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with a solid 11.31 K/9 in 26 games (two starts).
