As much as you can say the Phillies (67-57) have not become complacent, their series loss in Washington, D.C. is a much-needed reminder there is still a lot of work to do. In addition, the Nationals have just been one of those ballclubs they've had issues with all season. (7-6 overall record in favor of Philadelphia.) The Phillies maintain a slight advantage for the top NL wild card spot, but now it gets more interesting. Next up they face a potentially defining series versus the Giants (65-59), who sit just 2.0 games behind them in the standings.
Probable starting pitchers
We wouldn't say it's time to worry about Aaron Nola (10-8) per se, but his recent form has certainly raised some eyebrows. Consider that he has allowed four or more earned runs in three of his previous four starts. This includes giving up four runs last time out in Toronto, which was part of 5.0 innings which saw Nola allow four hits and a season-high four walks. On the season he has 11 quality starts in 25 outings, on the way to recording a 4.58 ERA, 4.25 FIP and 1.154 WHIP.
Although listed as the starter, Scott Alexander (6-2) is in reality the opener. As such, not too much stock should be put into the impact he will have on Monday night's game. On the season, Alexander has made 44 appearances (37.2 combined innings), in the process recording a 4.06 ERA, 3.32 FIP and 1.221 WHIP. For his nine-year Major League career, he has a 3.15 ERA, 3.68 FIP and 1.281 WHIP in 272 games (260.0 innings.)
