Whilst appreciating it's a 162-game season and anyone can beat anyone, you shouldn't be losing a series to the lowly Pirates at this stage of the year. As a result of the two consecutive loses to their Pennsylvania rivals, the Phillies (56-49) now sit outside a wild card spot, albeit only by half a game. In any event, Rob Thomson and his players are now in Miami for a crucial four-game series versus a Marlins (57-49) side also fighting for their playoff lives.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Taijuan Walker (11-4) is producing a fine first season in Philadelphia, with him on course to set career-highs in starts and wins. He has a 4.06 ERA and 1.274 WHIP and while these figures don't jump at out you as such, he is second among all team pitchers with a 2.2 WAR. The Phillies are 15-6 overall in Walker's 21 starts. In his last outing at home to the Orioles, he allowed six hits, three walks and two earned runs in 5.2 innings.
  • Last season saw a breakout campaign for Edward Cabrera (5-6) as he went 6-4 in 14 starts, highlighted by a 3.01 ERA and 1.074 WHIP. Unfortunately for the Marlins Cabrera's taken a step back in 2023, so far registering a 4.74 ERA and 1.419 WHIP in 16 outings. Injuries haven't helped the 25-year-old's cause, with him recently missing a month due to a right shoulder impingement. His most recent outing in Tampa Bay was his shortest of the season, with him only lasting 2.0 innings as he allowed four hits, two walks and three earned runs.
