Philadelphia Phillies probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Miami Marlins, August 3
As the Phillies get ready for the final game of their series with the Marlins, here's everything you should know about Thursday afternoon's matchup in Miami.
The Phillies (58-50) still have exactly one third of their schedule to go, and yet every game is now beginning to take on extra significance. This is why Wednesday's 9-8 loss was frustrating for all concerned. Twice they had the lead in extra innings, but were unable to hold on against the Marlins (58-51). However, Philadelphia maintains a wild card spot and still has the opportunity to win the series in Miami on Thursday afternoon.
Probable starting pitchers
Michael Lorenzen (5-7) will take the ball for the series finale, in what is a highly anticipated debut for the Phillies. He undoubtedly boosts the rotation, in a trade which was made with the mindset of being in a 'win now' mode. Lorenzen has a 3.58 ERA on the season, with July's 1.14 ERA representing his best month of the 2023 campaign. At the same time, all three runs he gave up during July came in his last start, as he pitched 5.0 innings in a loss to the Angels.
It's been a tough season for Johnny Cueto (0-2) who was out with injury since the first week of April and only returned in late July. As such, he's only had four appearances so far this season, including three starts. In an interesting dichotomy, Cueto has a 5.06 ERA and 0.875 WHIP, although we appreciate it's too small of a smaple size at this stage to come to any conclusions. Regardless, he allowed four hits and four earned runs in his previous start, pitching 6.0 innings in a defeat to the Tigers.
