The Philadelphia Phillies (69-49) return home from their 10-game West Coast road trip and must be looking forward to some home cooking. They host the Miami Marlins (44-75) to open a short two-game series on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies finished their trip with a 4-6 record, but the lasting memories are not of the modest three-game win streak they put together but of the devastating 11-1 and 12-5 losses on the weekend to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Now 8-17 since the All-Star break, the Phillies have some glaring problems they need to address if they're going to start winning again.
They still have a 7.0-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East but have allowed the Los Angeles Dodgers to overtake them for the best record in the NL.
The Marlins come into the series 4-6 in their last 10 games. After the trade deadline, this Marlins squad looks nothing like the team that the Phillies went 4-3 against earlier this season.
Phillies vs. Marlins probable pitchers, August 13
- Taijuan Walker (3-3) will return to the Phillies rotation tonight after seven weeks on the IL with a blister problem. The veteran right-hander has a 5.60 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 10 starts. His return might bode well, as his best start of the season came against the Marlins on May 11 when he held them to one run on eight hits over six innings.
- Valente Bellozo (1-1) will take the ball for the Marlins today. The 24-year-old rookie right-hander has a 3.05 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in four starts. He shutout the Reds over 5 2/3 innings in his last outing, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four.
