The Philadelphia Phillies (19-10) continue their West Coast tour tonight by opening a three-game series with the struggling Los Angeles Angels (10-18).

The Phillies swept away the San Diego Padres over the weekend and kept pace with the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. They enter action today 1.5 games behind the division leaders and are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Taijuan Walker's season debut was not up to the standard of starting pitching fans have become accustomed to, but the bats supplied enough offense in the 8-6 Sunday win.

The Angels, on the other hand, are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins and have lost nine of their last 10 games. They currently sit 5.0 games behind the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners.

Phillies vs. Angels probable pitchers, April 29

  • Cristopher Sánchez (1-3) will start the series opener for the Phillies tonight. The lefty carries a 2.96 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through five starts. He's coming off his shortest start of the year, in which he threw three innings against the Cincinnati Reds. Sánchez didn't get much help from his defense, though, and gave up five runs (only one earned) on four hits while striking out three and walking three.
  • Griffin Canning (1-3) will counter for the Angels. The 27-year-old right-hander has an unsightly 7.50 ERA and 1.54 WHIP through five starts, with 20 strikeouts in 24 innings. Pitching in his fifth MLB season, Canning hasn't made it out of the sixth innings yet this year. While he has a solid 31.6 percent chase rate and a 6.4 percent walk rate, he gets hit hard, with a 25th-percentile barrel rate (9.9 percent) and 44th-percentile hard-hit rate (39.5 percent).
