It was too nervy at times on Saturday evening, but ultimately the Phillies (60-51) did what it took to beat the Royals (36-76) and even the series. The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the go-ahead three-run bomb from a struggling Trea Turner in the bottom of the sixth. In the process, Philadelphia ended Kansas City's seven-game winning streak and maintained a slim gap between themselves and the chasing pack for a wild card spot in the NL. Now, it's a case of winning the rubber match, in what will be an intriguing series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Probable starting pitchers
Taijuan Walker (12-4) continues to have a fine debut season in Philadelphia, including becoming the first Major League pitcher to reach 12 wins in 2023. The 12 victories have also equaled his single-season career high, with plenty of time to set a new personal best. Overall, Walker has been a solid addition to the Phillies rotation and is second among all team pitchers with a 2.5 WAR. He got his ERA back below 4.00 (3.99) in his last start versus the Marlins, allowing just six hits and two runs in 6.2 innings.
It's undoubtedly been a tough year for Zack Greinke (1-11) in Kansas City. The former Cy Young winner is on course for the second-highest ERA of his career (5.32) and worst ever single-season winning percentage (.083). It's not all been terrible though, with a chance at his lowest-ever walk-rate (currently 3.4 percent) contributing to an above-average 1.256 WHIP. Further, Greinke is coming off a start against the Mets, where he gave up just four hits, no walks and one run in 5.0 innings of action.
