It's fair to conclude things didn't go quite as planed on Friday night for the Phillies (59-51). Despite facing a Royals (36-75) ballclub with the second-worst record in the Majors, Philadelphia somehow lost 7-5. Yes Kansas City came in with a Major-League leading active winning streak of six games -- obviously now seven -- but you need to be doing better at this stage of the season. And better is what will be needed on Saturday evening, with no excuses.

Probable starting pitchers

Cristopher Sánchez (0-3) continues to be a pleasant surprise, since entering the Phillies rotation in mid-June as a regular starter. His 2.66 ERA and 0.908 are both lowest among all Philadelphia starters, albeit in just nine outings. Sánchez's last time out was an interesting appearance versus the Pirates, as he allowed no hits or runs, but did walk two and hit three batters. He was pulled after 5.0 innings due to a stomach illness, but is ready to go on Saturday evening.

The Royals will counter with Alec Marsh (0-5), whose had his challenges since being called up at the end of June for his Major League debut. The talent's there, as evidenced by allowing just five hits and two runs in 6.0 innings in a start versus the Rays, striking out 11 in the process. Overall though, he has a 6.75 ERA and 1.625 WHIP in six outings (including five starts). He last just 2.2 innings in his last start against the Guardians, allowing five hits, four walks and four earned runs.
