The Philadelphia Phillies (15-9) finally had their winning streak cut off at seven games last night with a clunker of an 8-1 loss against the Cincinnati Reds (13-10).
Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez finally ran into trouble he couldn't pitch himself out of, not that he received much help from his defense. He lasted three innings, walking three and striking out three, but only one of the five runs the Reds scored against him was earned. Yikes.
Edmundo Soda, Alec Bohm and Cristian Pache all committed one error — although Pache's was a throw that hit a runner at home plate. After back-to-back doubles by J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm in the top of the first, the offense couldn't muster much of anything against Reds starter Andrew Abbott and the bullpen.
With the loss, the Phillies gave up a game to the Atlanta Braves and now sit 2.0 games back of the NL East lead.
Phillies vs. Reds probable pitchers, April 24
- Spencer Turnbull (2-0) will start for the Phillies today. The right-hander is coming off a spectacular start against the Chicago White Sox in which he carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Coming into what will be his last start for a while with Taijuan Walker on his way back, Turnbull boasts a 1.23 ERA and 0.77 WHIP through four games. He held the Reds to one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in five innings at the beginning of April.
- Nick Lodolo (2-0) gets the ball for the Reds tonight, bringing a sparkling 0.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP into action today. He has only made two starts, but he has been phenomenal so far. Last time out, the 26-year-old lefty went 6 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Angels, giving up just one run while striking out six. He now has 16 punchouts to just one walk through 12 innings.
