Now that the MLB season is over and the offseason has officially begun, award season is upon us. The 2024 Gold Glove Awards were announced on Sunday evening . Phillies shut out of 2024 Gold Glove Awards despite boasting four finalists
All four of the Phillies who were finalists for the Gold Glove Awards this year — Zack Wheeler, Bryce Harper, Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh — lost out, as announced on ESPN’s "Baseball Tonight" on Sunday evening.
It was the second straight season that four Phillies had been nominated as finalists for the award, which recognizes defensive excellence at each position. Zack Wheeler was the only Phillies player who won last year.
The Gold Glove Awards are voted on by all 30 MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team, whose input makes up 75 percent of the total. The SABR Defensive Index is used to make the other 25 percent of the decision.
Bryce Harper, 1B
Bryce Harper made an instant impact on the field in his first full season at first base but lost out to two-time defending Gold Glove winner Christian Walker of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Harper finished with the second-highest Outs Above Average among NL first basemen with +8 OAA and finished fifth with 5 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). Walker led the way in the NL with +13 OAA, while Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves had the most Defensive Runs Saved with 14.
Zack Wheeler, SP
Ace Zack Wheeler was among the elite starters this season, and that dominance extended to fielding his position. The 34-year-old right-hander and defending Gold Glove winner finished with 3 (DRS) this year. Unfortunately, he lost out to Chris Sale of the Braves, who had 4 DRS.
Bryson Stott, 2B
Bryson Stott, who was also a finalist last year, got another nomination this season after finishing fourth among NL second basemen with 7 DRS. The Milwaukee Brewers' Brice Turang led the way with 21 DRS and was named this year's winner, beating out Stott and the Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte.
Brandon Marsh, LF
Brandon Marsh, who only played 684 innings in left field this season, was in tough against the Chicago Cubs' Ian Happ, a two-time defending Gold Glover, and the Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who both logged over 1,000 innings in left in 2024. Despite finishing second among NL left fielders with 7 DRS, Marsh lost out to Happ and his 8 DRS.
