We're all waiting for the Philadelphia Phillies to start making their much-anticipated offseason moves after the GM Meetings wrapped up in San Antonio. However, instead of free agent signings, trades or roster moves, the Phillies announced a slew of front office promotions on Friday afternoon.

The moves, announced jointly by managing partner John Middleton and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, see four current employees moving up the ranks, including a rising star in the world of MLB front offices.

Phillies name Preston Mattingly the new general manager as part of a big front office shake-up

Current vice president and general manager Sam Fuld, 42, will transition into president of business operations in May 2026. He is currently completing his MBA at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Fuld was originally named general manager of the Phillies on Dec. 22, 2020.

Preston Mattingly, 37, has been promoted to vice president and general manager. The move comes exactly one year after he was promoted to assistant general manager.

The son of legend Don Mattingly, Preston was hired as the director of player development in September of 2021 and has overseen a drastic improvement in the organization's development system.

In a poll conducted by The Athletic last winter, Mattingly was picked as one of the top rising stars to watch in the MLB executive ranks (subscription required).

“(Mattingly) is a future general manager for sure,” said one rival executive, per The Athletic's Eno Sarris. “Just the best person. Worked with players, coaches, scouts, analysts — everyone loves him.”

Taking Mattingly's role is Luke Murton, 38, who has been the Phillies' director of hitting development since December of 2022. Before coming to the Phillies, Murton worked with the San Diego Padres as a baseball operations advisor and the San Francisco Giants as a scout after coaching for the Boston Red Sox.

Finally, Edwar Gonzalez, 41, has been promoted into Murton's former role as director of hitting development. He was hired in 2023 as Latin American hitting coordinator and special advisor to international scouting before working as assistant director of hitting development under Murton in 2024.

“The continued growth of Sam and Preston is remarkable,” Dombrowski said, per the team's press release. “Both of them do a fantastic job, and these promotions provide continuity in the organization for years to come. Additionally, Luke and Edwar are both quality baseball individuals that are deserving of their promotions. I feel that they are well prepared to lead our player development system.”
