The Philadelphia Phillies have reignited their chances in the early postseason picture with their heads finally above water. The back-to-back NL East champions aren't unfamiliar with digging themselves out of early-season holes, but are putting together much scrappier victories than in recent memory. Their current run of close games has been drama-inducing, but it isn't a recipe for long-term success for the rest of the regular season.

The Phillies were getting their doors blown off in the early going of the 2026 season with a run differential as bad as -54 on April 27. They've since clawed their way back over the .500 mark, but in a lot of tightly contested one-run contests.

The Phillies are now 14-5 in one-run games, the best in MLB. Although it's great to keep banking close games, it's a fine line to walk for the remainder of the year.

Phillies need to find other ways to keep club afloat as the season wears on

Any club that wants a chance at the postseason has to be able to win a close one now and again. There's no question about that. The better teams tend to find themselves in more favorable scores. But most of these types of numbers almost always regress to the mean. The Phillies will need to generate more runs to avoid falling into such precarious situations later in the year.

The Phillies offense has been among the bottom of the league in most offensive categories. Their starting pitching, backed by a historic run by Cristopher Sánchez, has carried the majority of the weight thus far. The best teams can pitch effectively but also be able to generate some chaos in the box score with relative ease.

The Phillies put up a six-spot on Thursday and scored eight on Friday. It's not normally noteworthy, but it was the first time the Phillies had scored more than four runs in a game since May 18. The Phillies have been able to score just enough for their starting pitching to take over and bail out the subpar offensive showing.

Run differential isn't a perfect formula to determine the winner of the World Series any given year, but it does separate the teams that are more well-rounded and more capable of running the table at any point. The Phillies have proven they can do it with this roster, but they better start scoring more soon before their luck runs out.
