Phillies might have no choice in pending free agent decision thanks to Ranger Suárez

With the success Ranger Suárez has had on the mound, can the Phillies really let him walk at the end of the season?

Ranger Suárez’s contract with the Philadelphia Phillies is coming to an end after the 2025 season, causing many fans to already begin speculating about what that means for the team’s starting lineup. But with how Suárez has been performing after his brief stint on the injured list, it does not seem like the dynamic lefty is going to be easy to let go.

To put it simply, Suárez is currently leading Major League Baseball with the best ERA for starting pitchers since early May, per MLB’s Paul Casella.

When looking at Suárez's stats more closely, his ERA has been steadily improving with each game he's pitched. His ERA for the month of May was 2.97, but decreased to 1.30 throughout June, leaving him at 2.00 after his recent performance against the Atlanta Braves.

Ranger Suárez has been so good. Can the Phillies really let him go in free agency?

In that Phillies-Braves Sunday afternoon matchup, Suárez totaled eight strikeouts while only giving up four hits, helping the Phillies ultimately take the series against their division rival.

This game against the Braves is only one of a slew of impressive performances from Suárez. He has 10 consecutive quality starts, which is the longest streak by a Phillies pitcher since 2013, when both Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee managed to pull it off.

Suárez has been a part of the Phillies’ organization since signing as an international free agent in 2012. While he has certainly made his mark on the team over the years, and continues to do so, will there remain to be a place for him after this season is over?

The Phillies’ starting rotation has been dynamite so far this season, with both familiar names and some new ones. Zach Wheeler is off to a Cy Young Award potential season, as usual. Cristopher Sánchez has a 2.79 ERA, which is currently his career best. Mick Abel and Jesús Luzardo have been making names for themselves on the Phillies' roster, and fans hope to see Aaron Nola back on the mound soon.

Additionally, the Phillies have even more potential pitching power with their No. 1 prospect, Andrew Painter. Though it isn't clear when he may make his major league debut, the young righty has been progressing well in the minors after being drafted 13th overall by the Phillies in the 2021 MLB Draft.

But despite all this, if Ranger Suárez continues in the direction he's heading, he might just be too good to give up. One thing is for sure: the Phillies' organization is going to have some tough decisions come free agency.
