How often do you see a team that has two stars with legitimate Cooperstown cases on the same roster, let alone two in their mid-30s with a championship window to protect? The Phillies have that rare mix in Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, and managing it takes skill, care, and experience. You have to keep a veteran's mind in a good place while also managing what a 162-game season does to his body—and those two things don't always line up.
That's the balance that president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is trying to figure out. At his end-of-season press conference, he said the Phillies have penciled in Schwarber for 30 games at first base next season. Harper appeared in all 162 games this year, and Dombrowski made it clear that "we need to get him off his feet a little bit more if we can."
Why Kyle Schwarber playing first base is good news for Bryce Harper and the Phillies
This isn't a brand-new experiment. Schwarber initially worked at first base as a Phillie in the spring of 2025, and in June, Don Mattingly started him there for the first time since his nine appearances with the Red Sox in 2021. He finished the year with eight games at first base, six of them starts, and it didn't take away from the pop. In those games, Schwarber went 6-for-23 with three home runs and eight RBIs, a small sample, but a sign that a day with a glove doesn't throw off the swing that produced 45 homers this year.

Don Mattingly didn’t rule out the possibility of Schwarber playing LF at times either.

Harper's side of the equation is a little trickier. He was the designated hitter only 12 times in 2026 and went just 6-for-40 in those games. But over his career, he owns an .883 OPS as a DH, so there's no reason to think the role is a problem for him over a bigger sample. The idea isn't to turn him into a full-time DH. It's to give him 20 or 30 days when he can stay in the lineup while his legs get a break.
The ripple effect matters, too. Every game Schwarber spends at first opens the DH spot for Harper, Trea Turner, or J.T. Realmuto, who caught 123 games this year, the second-most in the majors.
In looking at what the Los Angeles Dodgers have done lately, reaching the World Series five times since 2017 and winning back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025, they avoided running their veterans into the ground in July. Though they're built on expensive free agents and aging stars, they won by managing players' workloads throughout the season to keep them fresh for October.
With Schwarber signed through 2030 and Harper through 2031, the Phillies' window isn't closed, but it won't stay open forever. 30 games at first base is a small change that could pay off when it really matters—down the stretch and in October, hopefully.
