After another disappointing postseason exit, it’s no secret the Philadelphia Phillies need to find a way to shake up the roster. There are obvious moves to be made with pending free agents, along with questions about who will, or won’t, be back. But the real question is, where should the Phillies look to add outside talent?

That conversation starts with free agent Alex Bregman, who opted out of his deal with the Boston Red Sox following their own postseason exit. The Phillies have struggled with situational hitting in October, and adding a veteran presence like Bregman should be a no-brainer when he adds exactly that value.

At first, it might have seemed like a long shot, but the rumors continue to swirl and they’re becoming more realistic by the day. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand recently listed the Phillies as one of three potential fits for Bregman.

It’s no secret that the Phillies have explored Alec Bohm trade scenarios before, and with those conversations already familiar to fans, expect the speculation to grow louder as the offseason unfolds. If Bohm is moved, the Phillies could add relief depth in the deal taking care of some of those needs.

Alex Bregman adds everything the Phillies need for postseason success

Bregman’s postseason pedigree alone should be reason enough for the Phillies to make a serious push. His playoff success, similar to what George Springer once brought to Houston and is currently doing with the Toronto Blue Jays, could give the Phillies that big-moment player they’ve been missing in the playoffs. A proven winner with championship experience can make all the difference in October.

Bregman isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, either. After an All-Star 2025 season, he finished with a slash line of .273/.360/.462, including 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games. In the postseason (three games), he hit .300/.462/.400. A two-time World Series champion, Bregman batted .294 with 11 RBIs and three home runs during the 2022 playoffs in the Astros' World Series win.

As much as the offense stands out, the defense is there too. His Gold Glove Award in 2024 would represent an upgrade for the Phillies’ infield as well, which would never hurt.

The biggest question, if Bregman were to sign with Philadelphia, is how the team would structure his contract, especially with one of their top prospects Aidan Miller continuing to develop in Triple-A and pushing toward the majors. Regardless, the Phillies need to get creative this offseason, and it should start with Alex Bregman.
