Free agency begins for the Philadelphia Phillies and the rest of MLB on Monday, November 2 at 5 p.m. With the team facing uncertainty about both its roster and the constraints the upcoming CBA negotiations could place upon its payroll, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski cannot afford to wait to make a move.
Tampa Bay Rays right-handed starter Freddy Peralta is one of the top arms on the market and would be a boon to any MLB rotation. Though the Phillies' starting staff is already five-men deep, adding a player of Peralta's caliber would allow the team extra flexibility later in the offseason.
The Phillies reportedly showed interest in Peralta ahead of this year's trade deadline, with a scout sent to watch him pitch while he was with the New York Mets. Peralta was dealt to the Rays just a few days later, where he turned his season around before becoming a free agent. The Phillies would love what Peralta could give them based on his stellar second half.
Freddy Peralta would be a great addition to Phillies' starting rotation
Heading into the 2027 season, the Phillies rotation will be headlined by a 1-2-3 punch of Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, and Jesús Luzardo. That trio remains one of the best in the sport. Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter showed some stability over the last few months, but the Phillies still faltered when injuries struck.
Peralta adds some very necessary flexibility to the Phillies. If the team were to sign him and decide to keep all five starters they have now, a six-man rotation could keep strain off of Wheeler and Nola's aging arms, or allow Painter to contribute out of the bullpen should he revert to his first-half form. If Luzardo's shoulder stiffness returns, Peralta allows the team to send him to the IL for an extended stay instead of relying on bullpen games.
Perhaps most importantly, a Peralta signing would allow the Phillies to trade from an area of strength, their rotation, for a right-handed corner-outfield bat, a place where the free agent market is dangerously thin.
Peralta finished the 2026 season with a 10-11 record, 4.42 ERA, and 156 strikeouts in 169 innings pitched. In 22 starts with the Mets, he was pummeled for a 4.99 ERA. After some adjustments to his windup and approach to the rubber, Peralta posted a 3.25 ERA in 10 second-half starts in Tampa.
Per Spotrac, Peralta is projected to receive a seven-year, $200 million offer.
