The Philadelphia Phillies have won their second consecutive series after taking down the Colorado Rockies Wednesday night with a final score of 5-1. They now look to secure their first series sweep of the season on Thursday. The Phillies hold a 4-1 record with much going their way early and have gotten contributions from their core group. A core that already has them leading the NL East.
What makes the Phillies great is their depth to the roster. Any team planning to make a deep postseason run needs the right players in place to count on in big spots. The Phillies have just that in utility player Edmundo Sosa.
Phillies' Edmundo Sosa may be a bench player, but he's one of MLB's top hitters early in the season
Sosa has been on a tear to open 2025. He's usually in the mix often enough, but filled in early due to shortstop Trea Turner suffering back spasms since the second game of the season, giving Sosa the starting nod. To say he's made the most of it, would be a huge understatement.
In Wednesday's 5-1 victory, Sosa added three more hits to his total while playing second base, including a double and two RBIs. Sosa is now 9-for-15, with a .600 batting average that leads all qualified major league batters. His on-base percentage (.625) and OPS (1.492) are also second and third in MLB respectively.
Those numbers easily lead the Phillies, per Brooke Destra of NBC Sports Philadelphia. His hits are producing key moments for the early season as the last two games, he broke open the scoring in each game with a timely two-run double.

Sosa was acquired at the 2022 trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals for JoJo Romero and at the time was a very under-the-radar move. For his career, he has a slash line of .259/.316/.409, good for a .725 OPS. He's made a role for himself in Philadelphia and Phillies fans are jumping every time he steps in the batter's box. He's played a huge part in keeping the team afloat (subscription required), per Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer, filling in and helping the Phillies in their playoff runs.
The 29-year-old now has four straight multi-hit games, which is something he has never done in his career, according to Cory Nidoh of Philly Sports Network. Sosa had 13 multi-hit games in 90 contests in 2024.
Eventually, the early season numbers will come back down to earth, but Sosa meeting the moments so far will not be lost on Phillies fans. The Phillies don't get the biggest contributions from their bench, so having a reserve like Sosa to plug in keeps the team running a lot smoother. To assume he keeps up the Barry Bonds-level pace may be a bit of an overreaction, but fans can keep dreaming as long as he continues to be a vital part of this franchise.
