Phillies are risking losing a big part of their future for the sake of Dave Dombrowski

Why so much loyalty to Dave?

As the offseason begins for most of the teams in Major League Baseball, personnel shuffles start to take place. Managers, coaches and players will all be on the move shortly, as will executives. To wit, reports indicate that the Phillies’ Sam Fuld is a possibility to be scooped up by another team to head a baseball operations department, and is currently involved in the Athletics' search. Fuld is considered an up-and-coming star in the front office world, making it quite confusing why the Phillies would offer current head honcho Dave Dombrowski another contract extension while letting Fuld explore other opportunities.

Dave Dombrowski has served as the Phillies’ president of baseball operations since the 2020-2021 offseason and has overseen one of the more prosperous eras in franchise history that includes five straight playoff appearances and a National League pennant. Unfortunately, the results have trended downward each year since a magical 2022 run to the World Series, and the current roster doesn’t look capable of bringing home a trophy any time soon.

Large portions of the fanbase believe the 70-year-old Dombrowski is not the right man to save the Phillies’ sinking ship, but principal owner John Middleton doesn’t see it that way. Evidently Middleton is so enamored that The Athletic's Matt Gelb reported a contract extension is imminent for Dombrowski.

Suffice it to say, Dave Dombrowski isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Gelb posited that one last contract extension should come with a succession plan revolving around current general manager Preston Mattingly. It seems the current regime will be in place in some shape or form for the foreseeable future.

So where does Sam Fuld fit into all this? The diminutive outfielder transitioned to a front office role after his eight-year big league career, initially serving as major league player coordinator for Matt Klentak’s Phillies back in 2017. Ahead of the 2021 campaign, Fuld received a promotion (from Dombrowski) to the general manager position and remained there until the end of the 2024 season.

At that point Fuld took a step back from the organization, heading to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School to earn a master’s degree. The 44-year-old then returned to the Phillies this year on the business side of things.

Apparently Fuld isn’t done with baseball operations, seeing as the future-Las Vegas Athletics are considering him for the lead role in their baseball operations department. It’s not surprising, considering the former Team Israel star spent the final two seasons of his playing career (broken up by a brief pit stop with the Minnesota Twins) in Oakland with the A’s.

MLB teams don’t usually allow front office staff to switch organizations for lateral moves, but quite often don’t stand in the way of executives getting promotions. If Fuld were to be offered the top job with the A’s, it’s almost certain the Phillies would allow it. So, if Fuld is such a well-respected baseball mind, why would the Phillies let him take his talents elsewhere? The simple answer is that Dave Dombrowski is blocking his path.

The Phillies could be making a grave mistake if they let Sam Fuld walk in deference to Dave Dombrowski

The future Hall of Fame team architect has spent most of the past 30 years in charge of various front offices, and it appears Middleton is willing to let him keep going in Philly for as long as he wants. If that means bright young stars like Sam Fuld get scooped up by other forward-thinking clubs, so be it.

Is that really what’s best for the Phillies as an organization long-term? Dombrowski certainly won’t be around forever (in fact, it seems just five years might be stretching it) and he’s not exactly doing a bang-up job lately anyway. Is the plan really to simply let him continue running it back year after year until he decides it’s time to retire?

Such an outcome wouldn’t be particularly shocking for a Phillies franchise that has clearly valued familiarity and continuity over almost anything else in recent years. The current core pieces of Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola have spent the better part of the past decade in Philly, and are all locked up for years to come (aside from Wheeler, who has mulled retiring after next season). It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to see the sun set on Dombrowski’s reign right around the same time it does so on this core.

Who’s to know whether or not Sam Fuld would steer the Phillies into a new golden age. After all, he’s never pulled the strings on a team of his own. However, one thing the Phillies desperately need is an infusion of fresh blood and a younger, more dynamic approach. Letting Sam Fuld walk to the Athletics, or anyone else for that matter, would just take away another opportunity to shake things up that the Phillies so desperately need.
