Alec Bohm's disrespect in MLB Network's third base rankings is laughable

Alec Bohm was left off MLB Network’s Top 10 third basemen rankings, despite being an All-Star player in his prime.

Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm’s future within the organization has been a hot topic this offseason. The 28-year-old enjoyed a breakout season in 2024, earning the first All-Star selection of his five-year career.

Barring an unlikely trade at this point, Bohm is set to be the Phillies’ starting third baseman in 2025. He’ll look to rebound after a disastrous end to his 2024 season.

MLB Network somehow didn't include Phillies' Alec Bohm in the Top 10 third basemen

Bohm was left off of MLB Network’s Top 10 third basemen right now list, despite his All-Star season. His late-season drop-off in production is concerning, but the former first-round pick has proven to be one of the best offensive third basemen in Major League Baseball.

Bohm led all third basemen with 44 doubles and a .280 batting average in 2024. He had the fourth most hits (155) and RBI (97) and was in the top 10 for on-base percentage, slugging, OPS and triples.

Cleveland Guardians third baseman José Ramírez led all third basemen with a 6.5 fWAR a season ago. Bohm had the seventh-highest fWAR at 3.5. Bohm had a higher fWAR than four players on MLB Network’s rankings.

Bohm slashed .295/.348/.482 with a .830 OPS, 33 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs and 70 RBI before the All-Star break. The right-hander slashed .251/.299/.382 with a .681 OPS, 11 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 27 RBI after the All-Star break.

It was a concerning falloff that carried into the playoffs. Bohm went 1-for-13 with one walk during the Phillies’ short-lived playoff run.

Bohm’s late-season struggles can be directly correlated to a hand injury he suffered in late August. He returned on Sept. 15 after spending some time on the IL, but he wasn’t the same player he was before the injury.

Bohm had a season-low .170 batting average in September with just two extra-base hits and eight RBI. He’s not a player to draw a ton of walks, but his poor plate discipline in the final month of the season was alarming. Bohm struck out 10 times and walked only twice in 47 at-bats.

Bohm’s absence in the third base rankings likely has to do with how the season ended for him and his sub-par defensive abilities. He had a .960 fielding percentage at third base in 2024 and owns a career .959 fielding percentage at the hot corner.

Nonetheless, it’s hard to say that there are 10 third basemen better than Bohm right now in baseball.
