Phillies address Adolis Garcia injury (kinda) in trade with White Sox

It's something...

The Philadelphia Phillies find themselves in quite the hole in the NL East. It is absolutely true that the team started playing much better in the wake of Rob Thomson's firing, but those pesky Braves just aren't losing much and Philly is already looking at an eight-game deficit in the middle of June. There was hope that Adolis Garcia could provide a boost to their outfield corps, but those were pretty quickly dashed when Garcia injured his shoulder on a throw to home.

Just like that, the Phillies have to go into damage control mode before the trade market is really ready to allow for such moves. However, Dave Dombrowski found a way to get an early deal done, as it was revealed on Thursday that the Phillies traded two prospects for White Sox outfielder Derek Hill.

The cost here is relatively tame. Hill has a couple more years of team control after 2026, so he was never going to come for free. However, Campbell is just a light-hitting Double-A outfielder who has posted a .693 OPS across 55 games in 2026. Colmenares has played significantly better at high-A, but he is also currently on the injured list. Neither player was in the Phillies' top 30 prospects according to MLB Pipeline.

However, you get what you pay for and Hill is pretty...unexciting. While he can defend all three positions in the outfield, Hill has never been able to hit much in the majors across seven seasons with six different teams. Given his modest .659 OPS this season, you can wager a lot of money that he is a stopgap solution and nothing more, although he could end up being a great pinch-runner the rest of the way.

This probably isn't a great sign regarding the severity of Garcia's shoulder injury, but this sort of move is the best that the Phillies can hope for for now. It is too early to take advantage of a robust outfield market and they can't afford to wait around for the rest of the league to be willing to wheel and deal. Unfortunately, it is also hard to see this move being enough to move the needle.
