It's Rivalry Weekend in Major League Baseball, which means that the Philadelphia Phillies (25-18) host the Pittsburgh Pirates (15-29) for three games at Citizens Bank Park beginning on Friday. After their off-day on Thursday, the Phillies will be looking to bounce back from the brutal second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Phillies come in to this series 6-4 in their last 10 games after dropping the series to the Cardinals. They still sit just 2.5 games out of first place in the NL East behind the New York Mets. Manager Rob Thomson will be looking for some more quality starting pitching, with Ranger Suárez and Zack Wheeler scheduled for Friday and Saturday, after a couple of dazzling outings last weekend.

The Pirates come into Philadelphia 3-7 in their last 10, but had a 4-0 win over the Mets on Wednesday. According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, there's a "vibe shift" occurring in Pittsburgh, but they still sit 10 games back and dead last in the NL Central.

The Pirates are just 6-16 on the road, while the Phillies are 14-8 at home. The Phillies went 3-4 against the Pirates in 2024, and were outscored 30-27 in the seven games.

Phillies vs. Pirates probable pitchers, May 16

  • Ranger Suárez (1-0, 5.91 ERA) will open the series for the Phillies. After his tough season debut, the lefty baffled the Cleveland Guardians last time out. He went seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out five to earn his first win. Suárez won his only start against the Pirates last year, tossing six shutout innings with eight strikeouts.
  • Andrew Heaney (2-3, 3.15 ERA) will counter for the Pirates. The 33-year-old left-hander has a 1.12 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings over eight starts. Heaney's coming off his fourth quality start, in which he held the Atlanta Braves to two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out two and walked three, marking his third straight start with three or more free passes.
