The Philadelphia Phillies (42-29) embark on a week-long battle against NL East foes on Monday, beginning with a four-game series against the Miami Marlins (28-41) at loanDepot park.
The Phillies have definitely turned things around after a pair of series wins at home, including a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend. They outscored Toronto 24-6 in the series, capping the weekend with a decisive 11-4 win on Father's Day Sunday. The Phillies have now won five of their last six games.
With the New York Mets getting swept, the Phillies gained three games in the standings, and head into this week trailing by 2.5 games in the division. The Marlins had a sweep of their own this weekend, taking all three against the Washington Nationals. They're now 5-5 in their last 10 and sit 15.5 games out of the NL East lead and 10.5 back of the Wild Card.
The Marlins have scored the eight-fewest runs (282) and the 10th-lowest OPS (.699) in the majors this season. They come into this series with a 14-20 record at home, while the Phillies have an 18-16 road record.
Phillies vs. Marlins probable pitchers, June 16
- Mick Abel (1-0, 2.35 ERA) will open the series for the Phillies. The rookie has a 1.11 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings through three starts in place of the injured Aaron Nola. After an impressive start to his MLB career, Abel wasn't as sharp in his last start against a tough Chicago Cubs lineup. He allowed three runs (all solo home runs) on six hits and three walks while striking out just three over four innings in the no-decision.
- Sandy Alcantara (3-7, 7.14 ERA) will counter for the Marlins. The 29-year-old right-hander has had a rough time in his return from Tommy John surgery, but has looked better in his last two starts. He shutout the Pittsburgh Pirates with six innings of three-hit ball, walking one and striking out six. The Phillies tagged Alcantara for six runs in two innings on April 18.
