The Philadelphia Phillies (9-7) will try to right the ship on Tuesday after falling flat on their faces on Monday night in the series opener at Citizens Bank Park. Opening a four-game series with the San Francisco Giants (12-4), the offense started strong but fell silent once again in the 10-4 loss.

The Phillies scored three runs in the first inning, forcing Giants starter Landen Roupp to throw 36 pitches. Aside from a Nick Castellanos solo home run in the fifth, that's all they could muster. It marked the sixth consecutive game the Phillies scored four or fewer runs.

Phillies starter Taijuan Walker had a dreadful second inning that saw him give up six runs, although only four were earned after he threw what would have been an inning-ending double play ball into center field. He ended up going five innings with five strikeouts, but the one bad frame doomed his start.

With the slumping Brandon Marsh on the bench. The Phillies went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, and now rank 26th in baseball with a .199 average in those situations, per MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. They're now 2-5 since winning their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and head into Tuesday's game trailing the New York Mets by two games in the NL East.

Phillies vs. Giants probable pitchers, April 15

  • Jesús Luzardo (2-0, 1.50 ERA) will take the ball for his fourth start for the Phillies. The lefty has posted back-to-back quality starts, but didn't pick up a win last time out against the Atlanta Braves. He scattered six hits over six innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts in the rain-delayed finale at Truist Park last week.
  • Justin Verlander (0-0, 6.92 ERA) will start for the Giants. The 42-year-old living legend struck out nine in his last outing against the Cincinnati Reds, but gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks. The Phillies faced Verlander once last year and handed him a loss while scoring four runs on seven hits over his five innings.
