The Philadelphia Phillies (5-1) are off to a good start in the early going this season. They took two of three from the Washington Nationals on Opening Weekend. Then, they swept the Colorado Rockies to start the home portion of their schedule on the right foot.
As good as the Phillies have been to begin the year, the Los Angeles Dodgers (8-0) have been that much better. They've been better than everybody. The undefeated 2024 World Series champs come to town for a very early best-on-best three-game weekend series at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies head into Friday's game with a 1.5 game lead on the Miami Marlins in the NL East. The Dodgers are just half a game ahead of the 7-0 San Diego Padres in the NL West.
Last season, the Phillies won the season series 5-1, including a sweep at home. The Dodgers are also 1-6 in their last seven games in Philadelphia. That doesn't mean much, however, with a new season series about to kick off.
One piece of good news for the Phillies is that first baseman Freddie Freeman won't be playing this weekend. He landed on the 10-day IL after re-injuring his ankle in a shower mishap.
Phillies vs. Dodgers probable pitchers, April 4
- Jesús Luzardo (1-0, 3.60 ERA) will make his Phillies home debut tonight. The newest member of the starting rotation wowed everyone with 11 strikeouts in five innings last weekend against the Nationals. He held the Nats to two runs on five hits and two walks in the Phillies' 11-6 win.
- Yoshinobu Yamamoto (1-0, 2.70 ERA) will start for the Dodgers. The 26-year-old right-hander took a no decision in his last start against the Detroit Tigers. He went five innings, giving up two runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Yamamoto posted a 7-2 record with a 3.00 ERA in 18 starts for the Dodgers in 2024, his first year in MLB.
