The Philadelphia Phillies (17-14) welcome the Arizona Diamondbacks (17-14) to town on Friday. It's the first time this season that the 2023 NLCS adversaries are facing each other.
The Phillies come in to this one having won four of their last five, but failed to complete a series sweep against the Washington Nationals with a sloppy defensive effort in Thursday's 4-2 loss.
They open the weekend 3.5 games behind the New York Mets in the NL East. The Diamondbacks sit in fourth in the tough NL West, four games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arizona is 5-5 in their last 10 games, but have won two straight coming off a series win over the Mets.
Last season, the Phillies went 3-4 against Arizona. The Diamondbacks have a top offense again this season, with the seventh-most runs scored (161) and the third-highest OPS (.769). However, their pitching staff has seen some struggles, posting the seventh-highest ERA (4.39).
Phillies vs. Diamondbacks probable pitchers, May 2
- Jesús Luzardo (3-0, 1.73 ERA) will open the series for the Phillies. The left-hander has a 1.07 WHIP with 41 strikeouts and has been everything the Phillies imagined through six starts. Luzardo is coming off his fourth quality start of the season, when he went six innings against the Chicago Cubs, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five.
- Merrill Kelly (3-1, 4.41 ERA) will counter for the Diamondbacks. The 36-year-old right-hander has a 1.10 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings over six starts this season. Kelly won his only start against the Phillies last year, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over five innings.
