The Philadelphia Phillies (13-13) and Chicago Cubs (17-10) resume their series at Wrigley Field on Saturday. After a lackluster effort in Friday's rain-delayed 4-0 loss, the Phillies will be looking to snap their five-game losing streak and avoid falling below .500.
Phillies' starter Taijuan Walker lasted just three innings, surrendering two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four on 86 pitches. The offense wasn't much better, looking anemic once again. The bats managed just five hits and struck out 12 times against Cubs pitchers.
Aside from the bullpen giving up just two runs over five innings, there's not much positive to take away from the dreadful loss. Orion Kerkering, who has struggled recently, pitched a clean eighth inning with one strikeout.
In case you missed the news, the Phillies traded recently DFA'd Kody Clemens to the Minnesota Twins on Saturday morning.
Phillies vs. Cubs probable pitchers, April 26
- Jesús Luzardo (2-0, 2.08 ERA) will start for the Phillies. The lefty is coming off a fantastic start against the Miami Marlins last Sunday. He gave up two runs (one earned) over seven innings with seven strikeouts. Unfortunately, it was a start that the bullpen wasted, leading to a 7-5 loss that began the Phillies' current losing streak.
- Ben Brown (2-1, 4.57 ERA) will climb the hill for the Cubs. The 25-year-old right-hander has a 1.75 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings through five games (four starts) this season. He went four innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks in his last outing, giving up one run on three hits and four walks with six strikeouts in the no-decision.
