The Philadelphia Phillies (9-5) and St. Louis Cardinals (6-8) will finish up their series at Busch Stadium on Sunday. The Phillies are looking to win their fourth series of the season after taking Saturday's contest 4-1 behind another strong outing from Cristopher Sánchez.
Sánchez went 6 1/3 innings, scattering eight hits and two walks while giving up just one run with three strikeouts. The ground ball was the lefty's friend in this one, as he got seven ground outs, four of which the infield defense turned into double plays. According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, it's the most double plays for a Phillies pitcher since Zack Wheeler got four in July 2020.
Jordan Romano, who looks back to normal, pitched a clean eighth, needing only five pitches thanks to the Phillies' fifth double play of the day. It was the first time the Phillies had turned five since June 2021 and the eighth time since 1940, per Zolecki. José Alvarado picked up his third save with a clean ninth.
Now the Phillies turn their attention to securing the series win on Sunday before heading back home. They're in a tight early-season race at the top of the NL East with the New York Mets, with the teams coming into today's action tied. When the Phillies get back to Philadelphia, they'll open a seven-game home stand with four against the San Francisco Giants and three against the Miami Marlins.
Phillies vs. Cardinals probable pitchers, April 13
- Zack Wheeler (1-0, 3.44 ERA) will close out the series for the Phillies. The veteran didn't look his usual sharp self in his last start against the Atlanta Braves. He didn't get much help from his outfield in that one, despite Edmundo Sosa's home run robbery. Wheeler made one start against the Cardinals last season, taking the loss after giving up three runs over seven innings.
- Matthew Liberatore (0-1, 5.84 ERA) will take the ball for the Cardinals. The 25-year-old left-hander has gone at least six innings in his first two starts of the season, although he gave up five runs on eight hits against the Pittsburgh Pirates his last time out. Liberatore made four relief appearances against the Phillies in 2024. He held them scoreless through 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six.
