The Philadelphia Phillies (36-22) will hope to end their home stand with a win on Sunday when they close out their series with the Milwaukee Brewers (31-28) at Citizens Bank Park.
After dropping the series opener on Friday by a 6-2 count, the Phillies got trounced on Saturday in a mind-boggling 17-7 loss. Starter Jesús Luzardo unraveled, with 12 runs over 3 1/3 innings. Reliever José Ruiz gave up five runs in an ugly sixth inning, and was designated for assignment on Sunday morning. Prospect Seth Johnson is taking his place in the bullpen.
The Phillies were missing Bryce Harper for the first two games of the series and will have to go at least one more day without their superstar first baseman in the lineup. Harper hasn't played since getting hit by a Spencer Strider fastball in the first inning of the first game of this home stand.
The Phillies come into the series finale tied with the New York Mets in the NL East, and will look to salvage a win and improve on their 19-11 record at CBP this season.
Phillies vs. Brewers probable pitchers, June 1
- Ranger Suárez (4-0, 2.97 ERA) will close the series for the Phillies. After getting off to a tough start in his season debut, the lefty has thrown four straight quality starts. He has three shutouts in that time, allowing just three runs over 26 2/3 innings with 25 strikeouts. Suárez lost his only start against the Brewers last year, giving up three runs over five innings.
- Jose Quintana (4-1, 2.65 ERA) will counter for the Brewers. The 36-year-old left-hander has looked good with Milwaukee this year. Outside of one six-run outing, he hasn't allowed more than one run in his other five starts. Pitching with the Mets last year, Quintana went 1-0 in three regular season starts against the Phillies, with a 2.81 ERA and nine strikeouts in 16 innings.
