The Philadelphia Phillies (48-35) wrap-up their road trip on Sunday afternoon at Truist Park with the series finale against the Atlanta Braves (38-44). After a couple of lopsided scores in the first two games of the series, the two NL East rivals will settle this round with a rubber match.
The Phillies took Friday's rain delayed series opener in a 13-0 laugher, but the Braves bounced back with a 6-1 win on Saturday night. Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo wasn't as sharp as we're used to seeing him, per MLB.com's Paul Casella, but he held the Braves to two runs through five innings.
Unfortunately, the offense was held in check by an impressive Spencer Schwellenbach outing that saw the Braves' starter go seven innings with 12 strikeouts. Reliever Jordan Romano gave up the big blow in the seventh, as Sean Murphy took him deep for a grand slam, raising his season ERA to 7.28.
The only good news from an otherwise forgettable Saturday night was that the New York Mets also lost, keeping the Phils ahead with a half game lead in the division. The Phillies head home after this one to begin a six-game homestand on Monday with the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds coming to town.
Phillies vs. Braves probable pitchers, June 29
- Ranger Suárez (6-2, 2.08 ERA) will close out the series for the Phillies. The lefty has a 1.03 WHIP in 10 starts this season. He'll look to continue his run of nine straight quality starts today, a stretch that includes a six-inning shutout performance against the Braves on May 27.
- Spencer Strider (3-5, 4.07 ERA) will counter for the Braves. The 26-year-old right-hander has a 1.14 WHIP and 53 strikeouts in 42 innings through eight starts. After it looked like he was getting his season on track with a pair of quality starts, he gave up three runs over five innings to the Mets last time out. Strider went 4 2/3 against the Phillies on May 27, allowing one run on one hit while walking four, striking out seven and infamously plunking Bryce Harper.
