The Philadelphia Phillies (7-2) head into Truist Park to begin a three-game series against the NL East rival Atlanta Braves (1-8) on Tuesday.

The Braves have face planted to begin the season, and go into this series six games behind the Phillies in the NL East. The Phillies lead the division by one game over the New York Mets heading into action on Tuesday. The Phillies have a prime opportunity to make Atlanta's horrible start even worse this week.

The Phillies are coming off a weekend series win over the previously undefeated Los Angeles Dodgers, proving they are every bit as good as the reigning World Series champs, per MLB.com Todd Zolecki. The Phillies took two of three games at Citizens Bank Park, including a comeback 8-7 win on Sunday — their eighth win in their last 10 meetings with the Dodgers.

Now, the Phillies square off against the Braves, who they went 6-7 against in 2024. Over the last two seasons, the Braves have a 16-14 edge in the head-to-head matchup. The first game sets up to be a doozy, with the top two NL Cy Young vote getters facing off on Tuesday.

Phillies vs. Braves probable pitchers, April 8

  • Zack Wheeler (1-0, 1.38 ERA) will make his third start of the season for the Phillies. The 2024 NL Cy Young runner-up gave up just one run while striking out 10 Colorado Rockies over seven innings in his last outing. Wheeler went 1-1 in three starts against the Braves last year, with a ridiculous 0.95 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 19 innings.
  • Chris Sale (0-1, 5.40 ERA) will take the ball for the Braves. The 36-year-old left-hander, coming off his 2024 NL Cy Young win, will also make his third start of the season. He took the loss in his last start against the Dodgers, allowing three runs on four hits with just five strikeouts in five innings. He took a no decision in his one start against the Phillies in 2024, giving up two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
